Our Contribution

GCCM served as the primary specialist contractor for all glass and glazing requirements on the Balos development. We were responsible for the end-to-end management of fabrication and installation of exterior storefront systems. Our team executed intricate interior glazing scopes designed to define specific retail areas elegantly. We ensured the seamless integration of heavy structural glass elements with the surrounding architecture. The scope also included installing high-performance glass to balance aesthetics with energy efficiency.

Key Features

The project defines itself by expansive, floor-to-ceiling structural glass façades that maximize streetside visibility. Large-format, frameless glass entrances create a seamless and welcoming transition for high-end shoppers. We utilized high-clarity, low-iron glass throughout to ensure true color rendition for product displays. Sophisticated interior glass partitions provide necessary separation without sacrificing the open-concept feel. Custom-finished architectural metal cladding was integrated to complement the sleek glazing systems.

Challenges and Solutions

Working within the dense, active Washington DC urban environment presented significant logistical hurdles for material staging. Solution: We implemented precise just-in-time delivery schedules to mitigate site congestion. Installing oversized, heavy glass panels required navigating tight spaces without compromising safety. Solution: We utilized specialized vacuum lifting equipment and highly trained rigging crews. Meeting the architect’s incredibly tight tolerances for a "high-end" finish was critical. Solution: Laser scanning was used for verification before fabrication to ensure a perfect fit.

Impact and Benefits

The striking new glazing facade significantly enhances the streetscape presence and curb appeal of the location. The high-visibility storefronts actively attract foot traffic and elevate brand perception for luxury tenants. Abundant natural light permeates the space, creating an inviting atmosphere that encourages longer customer dwell times. The high-performance thermal glass envelope contributes to reduced long-term operational utility costs for the building. The completed project establishes a new benchmark for contemporary retail design in the DC market.
